leaving The Refuge... a poem

the Refuge on a foggy morning

the Refuge on a foggy morning

we’ve been in our new home, “the Nest,” for exactly one month now, and to be honest it's been so healing for me in so many ways. there’s a multitude of new poems pouring out (you can check them out on my instagram and facebook pages) and new songs birthing themselves (forthcoming). of course, there are things i will miss at The Refuge, but many of them are also here- like the birds and the quiet mornings. the thing i didn’t realize i’d miss so much (until after we’d been here for a while) is hugs, but i get to share plenty of them when i visit. mostly, i’m delighted to see what’s emerging over there and to support it however i can. for now, here’s what i wrote before we left the Refuge.

what i will miss here...

sunrises under the great, wise oak.

soaking the healing waters and day's first light into my bones.

conversations of hundreds of little birds going about their sweet, busy little lives.

the branched eye watching over me as i welcome the day and open my heart yet again.

ravens, doves, hawks, owls, herons,

each one's musical flight,

some near silent,

some announcing their presence with whoosh or flutter.

___

the early morning quiet

as my love kindles fire from the night's warm coals

while i make tea before day breaks.

(this i hope to bring with us.)

___

the growing light as night eases into day, and sky turns pink and blue.

the little room of wood and glass we loved into

a sanctuary for my solitude.

a refuge from the Refuge

where words blossomed to poetry and song.

a gift- the little cabin not in the forest.

___

the sweet gatherings of souls

seeking connection and comfort in each others' company,

opening hearts and arms to the beauty of shared meals, conversations and experiences

filled with love and delight.

___

my gratitude runs deep, like a river,

under every inch of this holy ground,

a prayer of thanks in each breath,

every footfall,

each tear falling from my appreciative eyes.

thank you. thank you. thank you.
