a conversation with the trees

i was walking in
a majestic oak and pine
forest, taking in

the smells, sounds and sights
as the sun crested the edge
of the canopy.

gratitude took me
to tears as i thought of how
very much these old

ones offer my small
presence. their silence and still,
deep wisdom echoed

in my heart, as i
asked, “but what can i offer
you in return, other

than my gratitude?”
their reply took me deeper
still as i heard them

say, “dear one, there is
no hierarchy here in
nature. your presence

is a gift, your sweet
and humble gratitude a
blessing in return.

enjoy this moment.
your welcoming, reverent
heart is just enough.”
